Both versions of this buttercream frosting are crazy simple to throw together and will help you avoid the grocery store when you need either vanilla or chocolate frosting.

Recipe Notes

  • The vanilla version makes approx. 1 cup of frosting.
  • The chocolate version makes approx. 1 & 1/4 cups of frosting.
  • Keep any leftovers (both versions) in a covered container in the refrigerator.  It is best eaten within a week.
  • Be sure your butter is softened before using.  It will give you a creamer frosting.

Yield: 1 cup (for vanilla)

Ingredients

  • FOR VANILLA:
  • 1/2 butter , softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tbsp vanilla
  • 1 -2 TBSP milk
  • FOR CHOCOLATE:
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 -3 TBSP milk

Instructions

  1. Beat butter until creamy. Then, gradually add in powdered sugar and if making chocolate, the cocoa powder.
  2. Add in vanilla and 1 tablespoon of milk. Continue beating until the frosting is fully combined and fluffy. If needed, add an additional 1 to 2 tablespoons of milk to achieve desired consistency is reached.
  3. Frost on desired cake/cupcakes.
  4. Keep any leftovers in a covered container in the refrigerator. It is best eaten within a week.

Notes & Variations

Vanilla recipe makes approx. 1 cup. Choolate recipe makes approx. 1.25 cups
