Slow Cooker Hoisin Chicken- Recipes My Mom Gave Me

My mom never cooked in a slow cooker when I was a kid.  I discovered the joys of slow cooking when I started blogging back in 2011.

This chicken recipe is a favorite around my house.  It's full of flavor and crazy easy to make.  Put everything in the cooker and cook.

Easy peasy!

What Is Hoisin Sauce?

  • It is a thick sauce that is primarily used in Asian dishes. It has a dark color and tastes both sweet and salty.
  • You can use it for a sauce (like this recipe), but, you can also use it for a glaze or dipping sauce.   It can be found in the Asian food section of your grocery store.  If you can't locate it, see the recipe card for purchase.
  • Depending on the brand, you may also find a low sodium version.
  • If you wish to make it homemade, you can do that too!

Recipe Notes

  • Chicken:  Yes, you can use frozen chicken breasts. This can be a tricky topic online, but, I have never had any issues doing it.  I simply cook the chicken slightly longer.
  • Chicken Thighs: If you wish, you can use chicken thighs instead. Depending on the size, you may need to cook a little longer.
  • Cooking Time:  Not all slow cookers are the same.  A safe internal temperature for your chicken breasts should be at least 165 degrees (F) when fully cooked.

Prep: 10 mins Cook: 4 hrs Yield: 4-6 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 lb boneless chicken breast
  • Salt and pepper, to taste preference
  • 2 TBSP soy sauce
  • 2 TBSP brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup Hoisin sauce
  • 1 tsp minced garlic
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • Sesame seeds, for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Season Chicken: Place the chicken breasts into the slow cooker. Season with salt and pepper to your preference.
  2. Whisk & Pour Sauce: In a separate bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, brown sugar, Hoisin sauce, minced garlic, and ground ginger until smooth. Pour the sauce mixture directly over the chicken.
  3. Slow Cook: Cover and cook on high for 3 to 4 hours, or on low for 5 to 6 hours.
  4. Shred & Combine: When ready, remove the chicken from the slow cooker. Shred or cut into your desired size pieces, then return it to the cooker. Mix well so the chicken is thoroughly coated in the sauce.
  5. Serve: Serve hot alongside rice, noodles, or your favorite starchy side. If desired, sprinkle the top with sesame seeds right before serving.
