Salisbury Steak-Classic comfort food! Ground turkey (or beef) patties cooked in your skillet and drenched with a flavorful gravy.
There is just something about Salisbury steak. Is it the thick patty? Is it the flavorful gravy? Is it because the best way to serve them is on a fluffy plate of mashed potatoes? In my opinion, it's all of those things!
It's classic American comfort food. YUM.
Ingredients Needed
- Ground turkey
- Bread crumbs
- Ketchup
- Dijon mustard
- Garlic/Onion/Salt & Pepper
- Worcestershire sauce
- Egg white
- Brown gravy mix
Recipe Notes
- Ground Turkey: Ground beef will, of course, also work. Your cooking time may be a smidgen different, depending on which you use. The internal temperature of ground turkey should be at least 165 degrees when done. The ground beef should be at least 160 degrees.
- Gravy: Your packets should be .87 in size. You will need 2 of them. See recipe card for product suggestion.
- Storage: Keep any leftovers in a covered container in the refrigerator. They are best eaten within a week.
What About Mushrooms?
Mushrooms are traditionally found in Salisbury steak. However, I don't like mushrooms and omit them from the dish all together. If you wish to have them, add them in with the gravy. The amount can be anywhere from a few to a cup. It's up to you. 🍄
Salisbury Steak
Ingredients
For the Patties:
- 1 lb ground turkey or ground beef
- 1/3 cup bread crumbs
- 1 TBSP ketchup
- 1 TBSP Dijon mustard
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 TBSP minced onion
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 egg white
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Oil, for the pan
For the Gravy:
- 2 (0.87 oz) packets dry brown gravy mix
- 1 tsp ketchup
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 2 cups water
Instructions
- Form the Patties: In a medium bowl, mix together all the ingredients for the patties until fully combined. Shape the mixture into 4 equal-sized oval patties.
- Sear the Patties: Heat about a tablespoon of oil in a large skillet (at least 9-10 inches). Cook the patties for 5 minutes on one side, then flip them over and cook for an additional 5 minutes on the other side.
- Simmer the Gravy: Remove the patties from the skillet and transfer them to a side plate. In the same skillet, whisk together all of the gravy ingredients until completely smooth. Increase the heat slightly to bring the mixture to a simmer. Let it simmer for 2 to 5 minutes, or until it starts to thicken.
- Combine & Warm: Place the cooked patties back into the skillet and coat them generously with the gravy. Continue cooking just until the patties are completely warmed through.
- Serve: Plate the steaks hot and serve alongside mashed potatoes, noodles, or rice.
