Creamy Apple Squares are creamy and sweet! These delicious bars start with a cake mix and are a snap to make.
Many years ago, I found a stash of recipes from my great-aunt, my grandmother's sister. I know that people usually get recipes from their grandmother, I did not.
My grandmother never baked and hardly ever cooked. So, I am guessing my Mom's love of cooking/baking came from her aunt, not her mother. 🤷
Anyway, when I first came across these bars, they sounded not-so-appetizing. I mean, sour cream? With apples? Ugh.
But, I was pleasantly surprised once I made them. They are delicious. Nowadays, I use plain Greek yogurt instead for sour cream, but, they are just as yummy.
Ingredients Needed
- Cake mix: you will only need the dry mix!
- Butter
- Apples
- Ground cinnamon
- Plain Greek yogurt (or sour cream)
- Eggs
- Brown sugar
How to Make Creamy Apple Squares:
- Mix the dry cake mix with butter until crumbly. Set aside 2/3 cups of it.
- Take the remaining cake mix mixture and press it down into your pan.
- Layer the apples on top.
- Mix together yogurt (or sour cream) with egg. Spread that on top of the apple slices.
- Mix your 2/3 cup of cake mix with brown sugar and ground cinnamon. Sprinkle it on top of it all.
- Bake!

Ingredients
- FOR CRUST AND TOPPING:
- 1 standard size box, yellow or vanilla cake mix
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 2 medium size apples, peeled and thinly sliced
- FOR CREAM LAYER:
- 1 cup sour cream or plain Greek yogurt
- 1 egg
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9 x 13 baking dish.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the dry yellow cake mix and softened butter. Mix together until crumbly.
- Measure out 2/3 cup of this crumbly cake/butter mixture and place it in a separate small bowl. Add the brown sugar and ground cinnamon to this reserved 2/3 cup portion, mix well, and set aside to use as your topping.
- Take the remaining cake mixture and press it evenly into the bottom of your prepared 9x13 baking dish to form the crust. Layer the thinly sliced apples evenly over the top of this crust layer.
- In another bowl, blend together the Greek yogurt (or sour cream) and the egg until smooth and well combined. Spread this cream mixture evenly across the layered apples.
- Evenly sprinkle the reserved cinnamon/brown sugar crumb mixture over the cream layer. Bake for 30 minutes, or until the top is brown.
